Lyme Regis will be celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee with a programme of more than 30 events over the extended Bank Holiday (June 1st to June 5th).

The Lyme celebrations have been organised by a steering group led by the Mayor, Councillor Sally Holman, and Philip Evans, editor of the View From series of local newspapers and an experienced event organiser.

The royal celebrations will include a civic parade involving all the town’s organisations and led by newly appointed Honoured Citizens, community workers who are being recognised by the Town Council for their exemplary contribution to the life of Lyme Regis during the Queen’s 60-year reign.

The programme will include street parties, theatre shows and sporting events as well as a Jubilee Sunday lunch, followed by the screening of the Jubilee Pageant on the River Thames, and the lighting of a beacon, one of hundreds around the coast of Great Britain.

Children of primary school age will receive a Jubilee mug, donated by Mr Derek Hallett, and a passport to free entry to many local attractions, organised by local councillor Rikey Austin.

Special guests at the Lyme celebrations will be two Chelsea Pensioners who will be staying in the Dorset resort throughout the Jubilee weekend and will be guests of honour at all the events.

A number of exhibitions chronicling Lyme’s royal connections will also be staged at various venues around the town and children will be encouraged at a workshop to make their own crown and be photographed in royal robes.

Local people are also being invited to record their memories of the Queen’s Coronation in 1953 for publication inn a book and DVD which is being produced for posterity recording all the Jubilee events.
